Labor & Human Rights
During the Covid lockdown, workers slept on cardboard boxes with no hazard pay.
In March 2021, a report by the United Kingdom-based Business & Human Rights Resource Centre studied 35 global fishing companies and found Century Pacific Food Inc. to be one of 29 that had not “initiated processes to stamp out forced labor in their supply chain” and one of 32 that had not “adopted the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability Standards set in 2020.” In the report, Century Pacific Food Inc. was rated “making progress,” the third-worst possible rating, “starting out,” the second-worst possible rating, or “at the starting line,” the worst possible rating, in all measurable categories: policy; human rights due diligence; supply chain visibility; remedy; practical actions; stakeholder engagement; and Covid-19 response.
On Reddit in August 2024, users shared experiences of low salary, long work hours, poor management, and “crappy HMO.” One user noted frequent rallies outside the CNPF office due to labor violations.
Health & Safety
In September 2021, four construction workers were electrocuted while building a warehouse inside the Century Pacific Food compound in Zamboanga.
Environment
On October 28, 2024, Century Pacific Food Inc. was one of four Zamboanga sardine factories given a cease-and-desist order (CDO) for violating the Clean Water Act of 2004 by “discharging effluent into the Caragasan to Talisayan Coastal Water Class SC, which greatly exceeded the allowable Department of Environment and Natural Resources effluent standards.”.

At least 17,900 people lived within a half mile of this plant, over 4,900 of them under the age of 15, while more than 652,600 lived within a five-mile radius, of which over 181,900 were under the age of 15, according to 2025 data from World Pop, a research institute based at the University of Southampton. This matters because it gives a sense of how many neighbors experience the quality of life concerns and health impacts of the foul stench of rotting fish and other toxic chemicals released into the air.
