- Former senator Jaime Orpis was charged, among others, with having received bribes from then Corpesca Chief Corporate Executive (CEO), Francisco Mujica, in 2013 during the establishment of Chile’s national fishing laws, as reported on October 10, 2018, in Undercurrent News. The trial involved over 200 court sessions, making it the longest in Chilean history, according to Contracarga, an independent media outlet. The former senator was eventually convicted of bribery and tax fraud at the end of 2020 and sentenced in April 2021 to five years and one day in prison, marking the first time a Chilean politician has been convicted of corruption.
