A series of Facebook posts and comments document complaints about fumes emanating from this fishmeal factory, dating back to 2020. A July 5, 2020 post raised concerns about lead contamination from the factory and possible respiratory problems arising from the pollution.1 On September 17, 2020, dozens of locals in the Human Settlement Francisco Bolognesi neighborhood of Callao gathered outside this factory to protest against the strong terrible smells coming from the plant causing respiratory issues.2 In 2021, local residents complained on Facebook about the terrible smells continuing to emanate from this fishmeal plant and called for the municipality of Callao to intervene and address the problem.3 In a document published in July 2021, the Ministry of Production indicated it had conducted an inspection of the fishmeal site on May 31, 2018, and found whole anchovy on site, contrary to requirements that the plant only receive and process discards or waste identified before arriving at the plant as being not fit for human consumption. The ministry fined the plant over 14,000 soles for the infraction.4
