In 2021, the government approved a sale of land to the Mundo Branco fishmeal factory, despite local opposition, according to El Ciudadano, a monthly newspaper.1 That same year, residents reported that the plant gave off nauseating smells, according to another article in El Ciudadano. Loose fish skeletons and liquids leaked from trucks with open-air loads dropping off raw materials to the plant. “My house is completely contaminated by that disgusting smell, you can't breathe,” one woman told the newspaper.2
In 2015, a truck from Mundo Branco fishmeal was documented dumping industrial waste near a farm at the border of a road in Buenos Aires Province. The levels of pollutants were more than 50 times above the regulatory maximum.3
Mundo Branco did not respond to a request for comment.4
