In October 2017, Nghe Huynh, a fishmeal plant in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, was listed among 40 seafood processing plants that caused environmental pollution in a report by the province’s People’s Council.1 These plants had previously been sanctioned on several occasions for the discharge of pollutants into the local environment, according to a 2017 article in Nong nghiep moi truong. However, it also notes that the level of sanctions had been too low to discourage polluting behaviour.2
Nghe Huynh was included in a 2022 Fishery Improvement Project for the area, run by Kim Delta between January 2022 and December 2024.3
Nghe Huynh discharged contaminated water that turned a sewer canal bright pink with a foul smell for more than 10 days in April 2021, according to local news reports.4 Before that, the water was reportedly a dark grey color and smelled bad/malodorous in March 2021.5 After testing, the provincial Center for Natural Resources and Environmental Monitoring found more than 10 times the allowable level of contaminants in the water.6 The authorities imposed an administrative fine of more than $12,000 on Nghe Huynh and suspended its operations for a little over four months.7
A Google Maps review from 2023 suggested that Nghe Huynh continued polluting nearby water and air.8
Nghe Huynh did not respond to a request for comment.9
