Fishing
On February 26, 2019, during an inspection by officials accredited by the Ministry of Production at the Pesquera Abc Residual Fishmeal Plant in Paita, Piura, inspectors found that the company was processing jumbo squid waste from its freezing plant and third parties. Inspectors observed that squid fins and tubes were being dumped into the waste reception pit without being weighed. This indicated that resources meant exclusively for direct human consumption were being diverted and processed for indirect consumption. Furthermore, the plant operated without using or having the required weighing equipment as mandated by regulations. The company was found negligent, they paid the fine and the sanction was fulfilled.
Labor & Human Rights
A public complaint highlighted concerning practices at Pesquera Abc, including the lack of emergency preparedness. The company reportedly failed to provide transportation to a hospital during an employee emergency, raising questions about its safety protocols.
Allegations were made against the security service provider, Eulen, for inappropriate physical contact by male guards during searches of female employees. The complainant called for accountability and urged affected individuals to report such incidents, emphasizing that harassment and inadequate safety measures would not be tolerated.

* individuals under the age of 15

At least 400 people lived within a half mile of this plant, over 100 of them under the age of 15, while more than 110,100 lived within a five-mile radius, of which over 32,800 were under the age of 15, according to 2025 data from World Pop, a research institute based at the University of Southampton. This matters because it gives a sense of how many neighbors experience the quality of life concerns and health impacts of the foul stench of rotting fish and other toxic chemicals released into the air.
