The Central Java provincial government received a complaint from a resident on January 20, 2023. “We have long complained about air pollution caused by the odor from this facility,” said the complaint. “Many residents have voiced their concerns and reported the issue to the local government, but no serious action has ever been taken.”1 On July 10, 2023, the agency received another complaint about the plant. “Does the Environmental Agency consider such a foul smell acceptable, to the point that residents’ numerous complaints are ignored?” said the message. “Please take action, governor.” On September 27, 2023, in response to the inquiry, staffers from Tegal Regency and the Department of Environment and Forestry conducted a test which found that odor from the plant was noticeable from a distance of more than 900 feet away. “Based on these findings, sanctions will soon be imposed on the company for violations discovered during the field verification.”2 “This factory is disturbing the environment, the smell is very strong, especially south of the factory for a distance of 5km,” wrote one commenter who reviewed the site on Google Maps in 2024.3
