In 2023, a 32-year-old worker died after sustaining an electric shock at the plant in Calbuco, according to a report by Pais Lobo.1 On May 29, 2020, Salmonoil was charged with improper wastewater management, which led to poor sludge management, presence of high levels of foam, bacteria, and reactor overflow.2
In 2024, a deadly algal bloom caused the sudden death of more than 288 tons of salmon in the Los Lagos region. The affected fish farms were owned by Multi-X and Productos del Mar Ventisqueros. The dead fish were transported to the Fiordo Austral and Salmonoil fish processing plants.3
Salmonoil S.A.’s parent company Fiordo Austral did not respond to a request for comment.4
