In 2022, the State Labour Inspectorate in the Kamchatka Region held the V.I. Lenin Fishing Collective administratively liable for violating state occupational health and safety regulations. Kamchatka authorities imposed a fine of more than $900.1 In 2024, there were reports about bad smells around their plants. “From the factory’s side, every day the wind carries a horrible fishy smell into the Seroglazka and Geologi neighbourhoods!” said a review by Zdes Byl Vasya.2 “Ever since they built some kind of processing line, it started. It’s impossible to breathe! What are you going to do about this? We can’t even go outside for a walk because of the stench.” An anonymous reviewer wrote: “The stench is unbearable, but those in power do what they want.”3
VI Lenin Fishing Collective did not respond to a request for comment.4
