- Summary of crew member deaths and potential beriberi cases
- The Aleksandr Kosarev is associated with at least one crew member death.
- Fishing
- Between 2019 and 2024, the Aleksandr Kosarev likely bottom trawled for 3,800 hours (158 days). Bottom trawling is a fishing tactic in which a vessel tows a net, often hundreds of feet wide, along the ocean floor. Bottom trawling is a particularly destructive form of fishing because of its bluntness: anything in the net's path–including non-target species, coral reefs, and dolphins–is swept up, often fatally.
- Labor & Human Rights
- “The changing room is constantly flooded—water up to your knees. The toilets are always filthy, the passageways never get cleaned, and the cleaner doesn’t do her job. The electromechanic is stuck working on lines [sic], and the mechanics in the processing unit are hauling fishmeal together with the machine operator. They always load around 350 tons of fishmeal. Surimi goes up to about 1,200 tons. Roe, milt, and fillets—roughly 150 tons per batch. The stench in the workshop is intense, with powerful but infrequent cleanings, especially around the surimi line…”.
- In the same month the review was published, a woman named Irina Alexandrovna Dotsenko appealed to the district court of Vladivostok for moral damage compensation following her husband’s death while working on the Aleksandr Kosarev, a company vessel. He died from rib fractures and traumatic liver rupture after he was hit with a metal basket during a transshipment. The court ordered the company to pay her more than twelve thousand dollars.
