Testimonials
An Indonesian worker onboard the Chang Tai 802 reported the vessel to the Indonesian Migrant Workers Union between May 2019 and June 2020. The ship was a Chinese squid jigger operating in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The fisher reported being unwell but unable to leave. “Due to lack of clean water, my kidneys were sick,” he said. When he asked to go home while the ship was docked in Peru, the captain said if he did so then nobody would arrange his travel back to Indonesia. “You will be homeless. So, you’re trapped in Peru!” he reported the “boss of the ship” as saying. With no other choice, he agreed to keep working.
The worker described his experience and many of the problems he faced, which matched categories that the International Labour Organization, the UN agency for workers’ rights, say are indicators of forced labor. These included: abuse of vulnerability, physical violence, intimidation and threats, and abusive working conditions. His testimony was published in a 2021 Greenpeace report.[^1]
The Chang Tai 802 is one of 39 vessels suspected of forced labor in a May 2021 report by Greenpeace based on complaints by workers to Indonesian authorities.[^2]
