- Labor & Human Rights
- On October 31, 2019, the Odiseo, owned and operated by Corpesca S.A., was fishing off the coast of Playa Las Machas. While attempting to lift a net full of fish out of the water, the ship was weighed down by the heavy net, and began to lean to one side. The captain of the ship ordered for the net to be cut, in order to save the crew’s lives and the ship. Seeing an improvement in the ship’s orientation, the captain reversed the order after only a portion of the net was cut. The vessel, unable to withstand the weight of the net any longer, capsized. Of the nine crew members aboard, only six escaped. Three were trapped under the overturned hull of the ship, and died. On February 3, 2023, Corpesca S.A. was sued for the wrongful death of these three crew members. The court case reveals a severe lack of safety procedures and supervision aboard the Odiseo. On the date of the accident, the crew members were working without supervision, and were not given adequate training regarding the proper procedure for tasks aboard the vessel. “CORPESCA S.A., [was] required to adopt minimum safety measures aimed at protecting the life and physical integrity of the deceased workers in the performance of their work, which they recklessly and culpably failed to do,” according to the court document. The defendants were ordered to pay 100 million Chilean Pesos, or $125,500 to each of the crew members' families.
