- On May 27, 2020 Hesler Meléndez, a union leader who worked aboard the Ribar XVIII, became the first fisher in the Chimbote region to die during the pandemic while participating in the industrial anchovy fishing season. Meléndez had boarded the vessel on May 15 and was disembarked at the port of Chimbote three days later after showing respiratory symptoms, according to Copeinca, which said it was following its protocol for suspected cases on board. While in quarantine, Meléndez recorded a video exposing poor conditions at the hotel provided by the company. He later died of pulmonary complications after being admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of pneumonia of undetermined etiology.
