Summary of crew member deaths and potential beriberi cases
The Xin Shi Ji 89 is associated with at least two crew member deaths.
Labor & Human Rights
In 2021 an Argentine crew member died on board after contracting COVID-19.
In April 2021 Manuel Quiquinte, a 67-year-old Argentine crew member aboard the Xin Shi Ji 89, died of COVID-19 after reportedly being denied medical treatment despite being ill for more than 10 days, according to Desinformémonos. In 2024 the vessel’s captain was found guilty of manslaughter and received a three-year suspended prison sentence and a five-year ban on having dependents.
AIS Darkness
Since April 2021, the Xin Shi Ji 89 has disabled its
AIS
for at least 235 hours (9 days). These instances of
AIS
darkness occurred across the Southern Atlantic Ocean. This matters because so-called “AIS darkness” is a likely indicator of criminal activity at sea, including illegal fishing, smuggling, and sanctions evasion.
