- In April 2021 Manuel Quiquinte, a 67-year-old Argentine crew member aboard the Xin Shi Ji 89, died of COVID-19 after reportedly being denied medical treatment despite being ill for more than 10 days, according to Desinformémonos. In 2024 the vessel’s captain was found guilty of manslaughter and received a three-year suspended prison sentence and a five-year ban on having dependents.

- Since April 2021, the Xin Shi Ji 89 has disabled its AISfor at least 235 hours (9 days). These instances ofAISdarkness occurred across the Southern Atlantic Ocean. This matters because so-called “AIS darkness” is a likely indicator of criminal activity at sea, including illegal fishing, smuggling, and sanctions evasion.
